The 31-year-old defensemen began to play hockey in his hometown Ust-Kamenogorsk, where he made his debut at the adult level in the 2005, and was assigned to the Torpedo in the Supreme League.

In 2008, Barys, that just joined the KHL, could not notice one of the best defensemen of Kazakhstan and invited Savchenko to join the club. It was the invitation to Astana that became one of the most important decisions in the player’s career – Roman spent 10 seasons there.

In the 2018/19 season, he moved to Russia for the first time, signing a one-year contract with HC Sibir Novosibirsk.

In May 2019, he joined Lokomotiv. In the regular season 2019/20, he played in 61 games – best in the team. He scored 12 (5+7) points, becoming the 4th most effective defensemen of the team. In the playoffs he added 2 assists in 6 games played to this with +1.

Roman Savchenko is one of the most experienced and productive defensemen in the history of the national team of Kazakhstan at various levels. He played at many major tournaments, including U18, U20 and the main World Championships, as well as in the selection for the Olympic Games.

In total, he held 602 games in the KHL, in which he scored 154 (56 + 98) points with a -23 and 374 PIM.
